On 11th September 2013 the Estonian Road Cluster and TTK University of Applied Sciences organised a RoadBIM (road building information modelling) seminar with international participants in the E-learning Centre of TTK University of Applied Sciences. The seminar was held in English and simultaneous interpretation was used. The moderator of the seminar was Ergo Pikas (Tallinn University of Technology).
The first presentation of the seminar was “Ongoing Swedish InfraBIM Activities” by Väino Tarandi (Professor, KTH Royal Institute of Technology). The second presentation was “Ongoing Norwegian InfraBIM Activities” by Steen Sunesen (Managing Director, buildingSMART Norway). The third presentation was “Ongoing Danish InfraBIM Activities” by Jan Karlshøj (buildingSMART Nordic). The last speaker of the first half of the day was Juha Hyvärinen (VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland) with the presentation “Ongoing Finnish InfraBIM Activities and the Finnish InfraModel”.
Ülari Mõttus (State Real Estate Ltd.) continued after the coffee break with a presentation titled “Actions by public owner, lessons learned in civil engineering”. This was followed by a joint presentation by Tarmo Saar (AruCAD Süsteemid OÜ) and Ari Puuskari (Managing Director, Profox Companies) titled “Skanska UK - Infra BIM Case Study M25 DBFO project (London ringway sections)”. The last speaker was Anna Klemets (Geotrim Oy) with a very interesting presentation – “Mobile Mapping in InfraBIM projects”.
RoadBIM is an interesting topic that is still relatively unknown in Estonia. The aim of this seminar was to explain to all interested parties in road maintenance (legislators, contracting entities, builders, maintenance workers, designers, etc.) how this field is developed elsewhere (especially in Northern Europe were the field of BIM is most developed) and describe the options it offers. All in all it can be said that the seminar was a success and that in the future the Estonian Road Cluster hopes to serve as a RoadBIM competence centre.
